2 Broke Girls

9/21/11

I was flipping through the channels Monday and came across a new series on ABC called 2 Broke Girls. It caught my attention right away and before long I had called my roommate to come watch it with me. The show is about Max a girl that works 2 jobs just to make ends meet. One of her jobs is waiting tables at a small diner and the manager has just hired a new waitress, Caroline. Caroline claims to have a lot of experience in top restaurants, but it turns out she is the daughter of a wealthy man who has just gone bankrupt and put in jail for stealing, now she is broke. She has no experience in the restaurant business and Max has to start at level one teaching her everything. The first episode really just introduces them and their story. Now they are beginning there journey together. This show was most likely written for a younger audience because of the choice of characters and the “slang” language. The main reason this show interest me is probably because I work in the restaurant/bar industry and its funny to watch them say things to customers, that I wish I could say sometimes. Also they include a twist with Caroline coming from wealth and having to go through the struggles Max has been through her whole life. You should give this show a chance!

  1. Can you say more about why you think it's for a younger audience? Also, do you think this show is a reflection of our historical moment? Would this show have been on tv 5 or 6 years ago?

  2. This show seems to be directed toward a younger audience because of the choice of characters. Both of the main characters in this show are in their mid twenties and although they come from very different lifestyles they are learning about hard work together. Younger people are the most relatable to the situations the girls are put in and the obstacles they have to overcome.
The main idea is probably not based off a historical moment, because it's setting is a little diner where the two girls work. However, some of the important details may very well be tied to recent historical moments. The fact that Caroline is the daughter of a well-known man that has just been convicted of laundering makes me think they may be secretly tying in actual public events. In the past 5-10 years there have been more people (mainly well-known or important people) convicted for this same reason then ever before, and these happenings have been very public. I never really thought about that but you are definitely right!
